D. J. David B. Spins Comics-Tunes: Wally Wood

Here’s a switch: Instead of songs about cartoons, here’s one BY a cartoonist. One of the greats, as a matter of fact!
Wally Wood needs no introduction if you’re a fan of EC Comics, Mad Magazine, Marvel Comics, DC Comics, or my favorite, Thunder Agents. That’s Wally Wood: double-you, A, double el, why, double-you, double O, dee.
Here’s an original, never-before-seen piece of art that Woody did just for little ol’ me.
What you may not know is that Wally fancied himself a bit of a folk singer as well as an ink slinger. I believe that’s Wally’s wife Muriel helping him out on the vocals on his version of “Jug Band Music,” which was also a minor hit for the Lovin’ Spoonful.

Comics Tunes on a Wednesday and no Wacky Wonder Woman? I can’t tell what day it is anymore!
Oh, man, that Snorky is so awesome! I want one!

I’ve always wanted to hear some of Wally’s music. Uhh…okay. I’ve heard it now. Get it out of my head.
Cool Snorky! I almost hate to break this to you but in the interest of truth, here’s a quote from Paul Kirchner on my blog from early 2006 regarding my speculation of his involvement in those Friends of Odkin sketches:
“Before I forget, you mentioned your Wally Wood sketch, one of those he gave out with memberships to Friends of Odkin. Should I say it? Why not: I traced off almost all of those for $2 apiece and Woody signed them. I’ve seen them sell on ebay for $150, so God bless us all!”-Paul Kirchner
After listening to the MP3, I’m glad he kept the day job.
Fortunately for me, my Snorky was one of the few that Woody drew and inked himself. (At least that’s what I keep telling myself, over and over again.) Not to knock Paul Kirchner, whose work I admire!
