I’ve mentioned many times on the I.T.C.H. blog (use the search box in the upper right if you don’t believe me) that the 1966 Batman TV show inspired more comics-oriented songs than anything else under the sun. But examining the cartune landscape in detail, I see that Spider-Man is running a close second! Wow! As with Batman, many of the songs are versions of the cartoon TV show theme, “Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can…” There are fast versions, slow versions, vocal versions, instrumental versions, jazz versions, punk rock versions, and more! While this accounts for a lot of the Spider-Man-related songs, there are plenty more from the Spider-Man movies. Of course, there are batloads of Batman movie themes as well, and Batman has the edge because there have been more Batman movies than Spider-Man movies (so far). If you take away the film soundtracks, I’d estimate that Batman and Spider-Man are pretty close in terms of number of song tributes. Since I’ve covered Batman so many times in the past, I’m going to balance that out with a bunch of Spider-Man music. Okay with you?

We begin with the first (and so far, only) Rockomic. Browsing the blogosphere I see that several others have beaten me to the punch on this one, so I’ll be brief.

Not based on a movie or a TV show, this is an album of Spider-Man songs along with a story. You can even kind of read along with the panels as you listen. A neat idea that didn’t quite take off, but still a historic artifact in the nexus of comics and music that we call home.

When it comes to secret agents, there are none with as many secrets as Agent Coulson, the star of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. For everything we know about this cool-under-pressure head of our favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. team, there are five things we don’t know!

Was he really dead? Did he actually recuperate in Tahiti? Is he an android or an LMD? (That’s Life Model Decoy for those of you who haven’t been paying attention.) Where does he get his hair cut? Does he wear his Bluetooth in his right ear or his left? So many questions, so few answers.

But tonight we find out the senses-shattering answers to these cataclysmic questions! This is The Big One!! You dare not miss it!!! The Earth-shaking answers will be revealed!!!! (I have to stop writing like Stan Lee now, I have run out of exclamation points.)
So tune in at 8:00 pm tonight to find out what really happened in Tahiti and whether Agent Coulson is really some kind of crazy Six-Million Dollar Man. (That’s a $40 Million Dollar Man, if we adjust for inflation.)
Meanwhile, click the link below and listen to a song all about Agent Coulson.

It’s New Year’s Eve and your old pal D.J. David B. is phoning in this week’s blog post so he can take the afternoon off.
To make a long story short, enjoy this New Year’s-themed cover featuring Superman and this Superman-themed song featuring the Beatifics.

It’s Christmas Eve and you’d think that we’d be doing a special, annual Christmas-themed blog. But this is the Digital Age, folks! Time means nothing. If this were a TV station we’d be showing “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” (by my old pal Tony Peters) for the umpteenth time. If this were a radio station we’d be playing “Have A Holly Jolly Christmas” every hour. On the Internet, however, time is irrelevant and everything exists at once. If you’re in the mood for holiday music simply go back and visit Christmas past and re-read the post from five Christmases ago. You can’t beat the combination of Walt Kelly’s Pogo and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, so why bother? Just click here and here to relive the magic.

Instead, we’re going to turn our attention to Mad Magazine, perhaps the only “comic” (well, it was a comic book before it became a full-size magazine) to include records within its pages.

When you talk about the nexus of comics and music as we do here every Tuesday, nothing brings the two together like a Mad Super Special with a flexi-disc stapled inside.

This tune even ties-in with Christmas, in a way. What makes a better gift than a nose job? It’s the perfect stocking stuffer! Notice the lovely noses on these comics-oriented ladies of Hollywood.

Would Scarlett Johansson have become The Black Widow with her original nose?

Would Thor have looked twice at Jane Foster if Natalie Portman hadn’t gotten a nose job?
Click the link below and enjoy “She Got A Nose Job.”

We haven’t turned the Tuesday Comics Tunes spotlight on Dick Tracy since 2010 (and 2008 before that).

So I think it’s time to turn our attention to the world’s greatest detective. Yes, before Batman, before CSI, and before Forensic Files, good old Plainclothes Tracy was scouring crime scenes and studying exit wounds in graphic detail. You have to give credit to Chester Gould. He was way ahead of his time. It was only this year that Samsung introduced a real two-way wrist radio, the Galaxy Gear watch. Dick Tracy had that decades ago!

My favorite thing about Dick Tracy are the bizarre villains. Some of them are plum nuts! In fact, Plum Nuts was the name of one of Tracy’s toughest foes. (No, he wasn’t.)

So let’s take listen to this totally mental instrumental track by The Ventures entitled “Dick Tracy.” We featured The Ventures way back on Tuesday April 29, 2026 if you want more info about one of my favorite bands (and one that recorded songs about more comic characters than any I’ve been able to find).

It was on this date in 1958 (give or take 11 months or so) that Yogi Bear made his small screen debut on the Huckleberry Hound Show. To commemorate this important anniversary we present our tribute to Yogi.

With a name stolen from the beloved Yogi Berra and a voice swiped from adorable Ed Norton, Yogi wasn’t taking any chances on being accepted by the American public. No wonder he says he’s smarter than the av-er-age bear!

This lovable cartoon bear stole pic-a-nic baskets and our hearts, going on to star in his own TV show, plus movies, specials, comic books and more. Not to mention being immortalized in song more than once. (See and hear here.)
Thanks and a tip of the Hatlo hat to our pal The Golden Gup, music maven and dee-jay par excellence, who is responsible for re-en-hippening yours truly to this forgotten gem (which I had forgotten). It’s The Ivy Three singing their bizarre paean to birthday boy Yogi Bear. Never to be forgotten again!

Every year it’s the same thing. As soon as Halloween is over they start putting up the Christmas decorations. And every year I hear the same complaints: “It’s not even Thanksgiving yet and already I’m hearing Christmas music on the radio.” Well I’m here to rectify that situation, toot sweet!
It’s not even Christmas yet and I’m presenting a Halloween song. And it’s more than 11 months early! Ha!
I’m sure I’ll get comments like: “Gee, DJ David B. That’s odd to share Halloween music 11 months early. Are you sure you didn’t simply forget to write about ‘It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown’ in October and this isn’t just a cheap stunt to cover up your mistake?”
So without further ado, here’s a lovely rendition of “The Great Pumpkin Waltz.” Enjoy.

Here at Comics Tunes Tuesdays we like to mix it up a little when we talk about the nexus of comics and records. Sometimes we focus on a topic that’s current, like the new Thor movie or the 75th anniversary of Superman. Sometimes we spotlight a character or an artist who deserves special recognition, apropos of a recent event. Other times we share a song for no good reason at all. This is one of those times.

Today’s focus is on Tweety Pie. Yes, I said “pie.” There has been a sinister movement by Warner Bros. to retroactively change this character’s name. Just the way Hanna-Barbera took the word “gay” out of The Flintstones theme song and pretended it never happened, those revisionist Warner boys have been trying to convince the public that their little yellow bird is, and always has been called Tweety Bird. We know that’s not true, don’t we cartoon fans?

The fact is, the first official cartoon appearance of the baby bird was in a cartoon called “Tweetie Pie,” released in 1947, the first Warner Bros. cartoon to win an Academy Award. You can look it up. Obviously, “Tweety Pie” is a clever word play on “sweetie pie.” While “Tweety Bird” isn’t a play on anything. It’s just dumb. It’s like Barky Dog or Grumpy Cat. Why bother?
And yet, Warners insists it’s bird and not pie. Why? What are they covering up? That’s why, I, DJ David B., have been campaigning relentlessly over the past 66 years (on and off) to right this wrong and restore Tweety Pie as the official name of this beloved (and delicious) bird.

By the way, in “Tweety Pie” the cat’s name is Thomas, not Sylvester. Don’t have a canary, Warner Brothers! Relax and enjoy this hit record by Mel Blanc.

This is old news already but we’d be remiss if we didn’t cover it. (And if there’s one thing we don’t want to be, it’s remiss.)
Superman has been around for 75 years! It seems like just yesterday that Action #1 appeared on newsstands and here it is 75 years later. Wow. Although I don’t actually remember 1938, I do remember Superman’s 25th anniversary in 1963, and the 50th anniversary in 1988. It seems like these anniversaries happen every 25 years or so.
A lot has changed over these last 75 years. I could go through and list all the changes but someone cleverer than me created this wonderful graphic and a picture is worth a thousand words (or so they say).

Click to see the big picture
The temptation is to show that first cover of Action #1 but we’ve all seen that a million times. Likewise the first issue of Superman. But what you rarely see are the first five issues all in one place. You’re welcome.

Click the picture and it blows up real good.
What can be said about Superman that hasn’t already been said? Not much, that’s why I prefer to let the music do the talking. This Tuesday I’d like to share with you the theme from the Superman movie of 1978, back when we were celebrating the mere 40th anniversary. It still holds up well, particularly because of the three-note da-dada that has the same rhythm as “Su-perman.”
Ugh. I can’t do it. I can’t end this without including that first cover, no matter how many times it’s been seen. As a special treat, I’ll show a giveaway reprint instead. This way it’s not technically Action #1 and it’s not quite a cliché.

When I started writing this blog back in 2007 (has it really been 6 years already?) the process involved meticulously going through my massive record collection in search of comics-related tunes. On more than one occasion I hunted down a record on eBay and paid dearly for an album with an appropriate song on it. I scoured record stores, asked record-collector friends for input, even went so far as to petition the government for a grant to research the nexus of comics and records! (Okay, that last one isn’t true, I was just trying to impress you.) Once the particular 45 or LP was in my sweaty little hands I painstakingly transferred the desired song to CD-R, then ripped the song from the CD to the mp3 format where it was then uploaded to the powerful Super I.T.C.H. servers for your listening pleasure.
These days, thanks to Google (the subject of my first blog!) and Amazon, I can find a song for just about any purpose and – bingo! – it’s ready to enjoy. Sure, it’s not as much fun as scrounging though mildewed boxes of records in search of an elusive piece of vinyl, but it’s a lot faster. Which leaves me more time to listen to music and less time spent on fruitless record safaris.

Which brings me to this week’s spotlight on Thor: The Dark World. The film just opened last Friday and already I have the soundtrack to share with you. No fuss, no muss. But first, some classic covers featuring Loki, Thor’s half brother, who co-stars in the movie, albeit without those giant horns on his hat.
