Teddy Roosevelt Shot!: Cartoons Magazine Centennial 1912

On this date, one century ago, Presidential candidate Teddy Roosevelt was shot while on his way to giving a campaign speech, by would-be assassin John Flammang Schrank. Roosevelt was known for giving long-winded speeches, and it was the thick notes of his speech which slowed down the bullet enough, that T.R.‘s wound was not fatal. Instead, while bleeding, he went on to deliver his speech for more than an hour. Click here for more details, plus excerpts from the speech.
Cartoons by James H. Donahey, W.A. Ireland, Harry J. Westerman, Nelson Harding, Robert Minor, Jr., Ole May, and Luther D. Bradley.

The one in the lower-right corner proves that the more things change, the more they don’t.
Following the attempted assassination of Gabrielle Giffords, Bill Clinton called upon the right’s modern “frenzied political hacks” to tone down their beloved eliminationist rhetoric; Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity, et al promptly fell to their knees squawling that their First Amendment rights were under assault by Big Government…and that the only solution was to buy more guns and be prepared to use them, you know, at some unspecified point.
I agree. Though I didn’t mention it, that particular cartoon also reminded me of the situation surrounding the attempted assassination of Gabrielle Giffords.
