This Day in Arf History: Stan Drake’s Born in 1921

Stan “The Man” Drake
After learning anatomy under the great George Bridgman at the Art Students League and working in advertising Stan Drake’s first comic strip was the realistic and beautifully drawn soap opera strip The Heart Of Juliet Jones. I believe Stan was the one who invented the term “Big Foot Cartooning” which he used to describe the non-realisitic humor strips that his fellow cartoonists did. Stan stepped into the Big Foot world himself when he started drawing the Blondie comic strip. The illustration below is a nudie-cutie by Stan that’s in my new book Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings. In the book you’ll also find a coy tasteful topless scene of Blondie and Dagwood’s daughter Cookie by Stan, (I assume Cookie is 18). Stan Drake was born on This Day in Arf History in 1921. Stan was in the sports car driven by Alex Raymond that crashed killing Raymond in 1956. The great artist Drake went on to his own reward in 1997.
