Makin’ Links # 146

I never knew how to pronounce him but Frank Giacioa has been a favorite inker since the mid-sixties, particularly good on Kirby. Prior to becoming known primarily as an inker, Giacioa had a long career as a penciller, also, including the two 1950′s DC war stories found here:

The general public may not realize it but Lois and Clark have now been married for many years in the comics, Here, however, we have a brief, illustrated report on the time they actually consummated their pre-marital relationship, as confirmed by the author, Elliot S! Maggin.

Kurtzman and Wood at Mad. Do you even need to know that it’s the brilliant Teddy and the Pirates? Wood may not even attempt to parody Caniff’s style but he does give some incredible work in his own style!

Finally today, an unusual British western from 1970 Marvel, The Outcast, written by UK writer Steve Parkhouse and drawn rather Conan-like by Barry Smith (pre-Windsor). Wonder if that Marie Severin-looking portrait on the wall behind him in the image above is an in-joke or just filling in space?

Italian pronunciation is usually pretty logical, especially compared to English. I would say “Jah-COY-ah” myself.
NB: the Fabulous Fifties guy has got you spelling the name wrong: should be GiacOIa (reverse the I and O).
Please pardon my pedantry: it’s a sickness, really.
I’ve only recently stumbled upon your excellent site: keep up the good work! \(^_^)/
