My Comics: “Just Say Yoe To Drugs”.
Felix the Cat may have used a mind altering drug to market comics (see below), but i use LSD to create mine. Or memories of it anyway. I haven’t taken one of those kind of trips for decades and hypocritically encourage my kids not to do so now. But, to be honest, the experience of taking Acid in my youth I greatly value now and I draw on it in my approach to comics. Even the bad trips-and one I’m convinced almost killed me-are now fodder for my funnies.
That along with music, spiritual matters and my “love story” as the Italians call it. And certainly I’m influenced by all the old skool wacky cartoonists I put in the Arf books like Rube Goldberg, Basil Wolverton, Rick Griffin, R. Crumb, Ernie Bushmiller, Boody Rogers, George Herriman, George Carlson, Ted Scheel, Milt Gross, Bill Holman, etc. Except for Griffin and Crumb, I don’t know if any of those other gentlemen did hallucinogens, though there’s some evidence that George Herriman smoked pot.
I thought I’d share the comic I did for the new Arf book Arf Forum, the caricature of me by David Cowles and the intro by some guy named Stan Lee. David also did a caricature of this last guy to start things off. Click below to start the slide show. Just say “no”, just say “Yoe”, and now just say “show”.
