Delegates: 1912 Democratic National Convention, Part 1: Cartoons Magazine Centennial

<

Today, our up-to-the-century coverage of the Democratic National Convention (of 1912), focuses on its delegates, with cartoons from the August 1912 issue of Cartoons Magazine.

Like the Republicans, Democratic delegates went into the Convention, without a clear winner for the nomination. In A Baltimore Moving Picture Film (the 1912 Convention was held in Baltimore; sequential comic strips at this time were occasionally referred to as “moving pictures”), cartoonist Ole May shows a Democratic Delegate on his way to the Convention, being accosted by various people, wanting to know who is going to be nominated.

Below, cartoons by Gaar Williams, J. Norman Lynd, and others, on how the delegates were getting by.

Click on the above & below pictures, to view the cartoons in detail, and read their captions.

<

Beneath, Clifford K. Berryman and others, comment on how long it took to decide on a nominee, and how many fireworks were involved.
