Sorosis, 1869
Our Women’s History Month coverage continues, with Sorosis, 1869, drawn by Charles G. Bush, and published in the May 15th, 1869 issue of Harper’s Weekly. A women’s club incorporated in 1869, Sorosis was a political and professional organization, one of whose goals was Women’s Suffrage (i.e., the right to vote). This made Sorosis a target for cartoonists, nearly all of whom in 1869 were male, and negatively parodied the struggle for women’s equal rights.
Below, the full page cartoon. Above, a close-up of the women’s convention (as C.G. Bush imagined it to be), with portrait of Joan of Arc in the background.

Beneath, another close-up section. Note the men emasculated by holding babies, while women work on political matters. Plus, keeping your man on a leash will always be in style!
