Makin’ Links # 49

zimlinks2

Halloween’s finally over for another year. While you’re sitting around munching on leftover candy corn this morning, here are some links to a few interesting comics tidbits.

Pappy offers up a sad and nostalgic piece on the time back in 1953 when CAPTAIN MARVEL just went away. Accompanying the piece is the very last (and rather violent as you can see above!) story of the so-called Big Red Cheese’s original run from the very last issue of Fawcett’s WHIZ COMICS. After this, Fawcett’s sole contribution to comic books over the next decade and a half would be DENNIS THE MENACE.

Parker and Hart’s THE WIZARD OF ID was a childhood favorite of my wife’s so I’ll have to show her this selection of 1966 dailies and Sundays of that long-running strip since that would have been when she was a child!

Over at BOOKSTEVE’S LIBRARY the other day, I extolled the virtues of unsung comics artist Alden McWilliams. Here, GOLD KEY COMICS displays a vintage 1967 story of his from RIPLEY’S BELIEVE IT OR NOT.

Artist Al Bigley neatly sums up his own pretty much accurate history of the comic book industry of the early 1990′s with a 3 page MAD-style look at the controversial Image Comic co-founder Todd MacFarlane.
