D. J. David B. Spins Comics-Tunes: When Captain America Throws His Mighty Shield
Did you miss me?
Those of you who were paying attention may have noticed that for the first time in decades there was no new Comics Tune last Tuesday. This is because instead of being at my desk diligently drafting my blog post, I was out at the movies seeing Captain America: The First Avenger. (Also my computer was under the weather, a little virus going around).
Needles to say, the movie was terrific. It’s a big hit and deservedly so.
I don’t want to write a full review (there must be thousands already) but my favorite thing about the film was the way they stuck very close to the source material yet updated it as necessary to make it palatable to today’s audiences. I don’t usually go for revisionism, but sometimes it’s required.
For example, in the film Bucky Barnes is an adult soldier, not a little boy who hangs around the barracks. That was an improvement for so many reasons.
Also, it was über-Nazi the Red Skull who sent Cap into deep freeze, not Baron Zemo, the villain with a permanent mad on because his hood got glued to his face. They even tied in the Cosmic Cube with the current Thor movie. Nicely done!
To celebrate this magnificent milestone in Marvel movie magic, we are pleased and proud to present a shield-slingin’ super-heroic song to soothe your sore sinews. (This alliteration isn’t as easy as it looks, kudos to Stan for doing it so well.) This Tuesday’s tune is a classic I’m sure you’ll recognize.
If that’s not enough Captain America for you, you can always revisit my entry from June 1st of last year, or this one from December 8th of 2009.
