Monkey See, Monkey Do!
The Purple Ape on this May 1951 comic book jumped the sales so much that all the DC Comics editors wanted to ape it by putting purple apes on their covers. The publisher was forced to leash the editors in with a monthly purple ape limit!

Ruth isn’t buying it — Ralph is right-handed.
Tragically, changing handedness was the one part of the terrible experiment that worked perfectly.
Wouldn’t it be funny if it wasn’t the ape on the cover that made this issue sell so well, but just the name “Ralph” that attracted comics buyers? Elongated Man would have been DC’s most popular character!
I’m impressed that they paid actor Raymond Bailey to play Panicky Guy in White Hat. (Bailey also played Mr. Drysdale on The Beverly Hillbillies.)
Bear in mind, this was 1951, eleven years before they made The Beverly Hillbillies. It’s likely that Paul Henning spotted Bailey on this ape cover and created the Drysdale especially role for him.
