This Day in Arf History: Kurt Schaffenberger’s Birthday

Although he was merely a newborn on this day in 1920, Kurt Schaffenberger went on to a long career in the comics industry, working on the Captain Marvel, Supergirl, and Lois Lane series. Here’s a dirty drawing by Kurt that was censored in its original publication and therefore could not be included in Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Cartoons. I’m working on a follow-up book so if anyone knows where I can find a copy of this art that shows the boobies please let me know!

This Day in Arf History: Jack Cole’s Birthday

Born on this day in 1914, Jack Cole is most famous for creating Plastic Man. Plas was originally created for Police Comics but soon stretched out and got his own title, too. Cole also drew major sexy babes for Playboy and other venues. BTW there’s a section on Cole in “Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings”. Hubba Hubba and Happy Happy Birthday!

Art Spiegleman’s tribute to Jack Cole and Plastic Man

Look for more Spiegelman in the next Arf book where he does a special piece just for the book!

This Day In Arf History: Mary Perkins Gets Hitched (and Craig Yoe Messes Up)

Whoops, somehow my records got mixed up. I meant to say that Mary Perkins got married to Pete Fletcher today in 1959. Christy Jameson and Buz Sawyer DID NOT get married today in 1929. Much thanks to Steven Rothman for pointing out my error and my apologies to Christy and her Buz and Mary and her Peter.

Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings Review: Viva Las Vegas!

Great reviews for Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings are starting to appear-just in time for the holidays! The one below is from The Las Vegas Weekly. How perfect is that?!?

They’re Not Bad, They’re Just Drawn That Way

by J. Caleb Mozzocco

The thing about the most successful cartoonists and comic-book artists is that when they achieve universal fame and acclaim, almost invariably they do so for having created or drawn one particular thing.

So however great an artist Carl Barks might have been, we tend to think of his art purely in terms of the Disney ducks he drew for decades. Joe Shuster may have created a whole stable of characters, but none of them boasts anywhere near the Q-rating that Superman does. Even Jack Kirby, probably American comics’ most influential creator, who succeeded in every genre of comics before hitting the superhero, is today best known for the capes, masks and cosmic stuff he did for Marvel and DC.

That’s in large part what makes Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings (Last Gasp) such a fascinating read—it gathers drawings from many of the giants of comic strips and comic books, from pretty far outside their known oeuvre. For the most part, that means naked ladies. Lots and lots of naked ladies.

Author Craig Yoe assembles contributions from a who’s who of cartooning—George Herriman, Milton Caniff, Al Capp, Mort Walker, Rube Goldberg, Dr. Seuss, Charles Schulz, Alex Toth, Chuck Jones, Steve Ditko, Neal Adams, Bruce Timm—and pairs examples of their “dirty” drawings with text pieces on the artists themselves.

The “dirty” of the title seems to be there more as a play on words than an actual indicator of how unwholesome the contents are. Sure, it’s not kids’ stuff, and dirtier than the works the artists are known for, but few of the contributions would qualify as out and out pornography, either. Mostly they seem to be blue gag strips, sketches or fine-art pieces of nudes and near-nudes (although Wallace Woods’ infamous 1967 “Disneyland Memorial Orgy” piece is certainly on the filthy side, more so for who is engaged in the sexual acts rather than the acts themselves).

Some entries prove revelatory, as in the quality of Barks’ non-duck work (damn, could that guy draw!), or Batman creator Bob Kane’s loose, abstracted style in a couple of sketches.

“Are you familiarizing our new maid with the surroundings,
or are you familiarizing yourself with her?!”

Others provide a sort of perverse thrill in that the style and forms are so familiar from the “clean” work that the “dirty” work looks like you’re seeing familiar cartoon ladies in a state of undress, as in Dennis the Menace’s Hank Ketchum’s drawing of a nude looking a little too much like Dennis’ mom for comfort, or a naughty maid by Shuster who looks a bit like Lois Lane. (Of course, there are also actual drawings of familiar characters naked, like Wonder Woman sans costume by her original golden-age artist H.G. Peter and another by her longtime cover artist Adam Hughes).

And then some of them just seem … off, like a Jack Kirby self-parody strip involving “Astro-chicks” and a penis-shaped rocket ship (there are some creators who clearly shouldn’t work blue).

For the list of greats assembled in one place, though, and the bits of comics history that might otherwise never have found a home, this book is pretty much an essential volume for the bookshelf of any fan of the comics medium.

I’m told comic book shops across the land are selling out of Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings fast. You better scramble if you want this season to be naughty rather than nice. Hurry to your favorite shop or order your copy online here.

This Day in Arf History: Birthday of Zack Mosley

Creator of the comic strip “Smilin’ Jack,” Zack Mosley was born on this day in 1906. The hero of the strip was nicknamed after Mosley himself, who was called “Smilin’ Zack” by his co-workers. Speaking of co-workers, Boody Rogers, who assisted Zack, introduced me to Zack and we corresponded a bit. Zack told me he got the idea for his aviation oriented strip when a pilot crashed in his back yard. I never got a nice Smilin’ Jack strip original. :( I did pick up the little piece of art below:

D. J. David B. Spins Comics-Tunes: Spider-Man

‘Tis the season to feature Spider-Man. Why? Because Spider-Man is always in season.

click for a closer look)

With three record-breaking, blockbuster films to his credit, Spider-Man seems like a world-beater to contemporary audiences. But t’was not always thus.

(click for a closer look)

Back in 1961, Spider-Man was a loser in a mask, who under his red and blue outfit was Peter Parker, a guy with “loser” written on his forehead. Just a smart kid from Forest Hills, Queens, who had no luck with girls, got picked on by bullies, and had trouble adjusting to adolescence.Meanwhile, a bunch of real-life misfits from Forest Hills were dealing with the same problems in their own way. They didn’t have super powers but they had power chords.

(click for a closer look)

Yes, I’m talking about the Ramones! Joey Ramone, Johnny Ramone, Dee Dee Ramone and Tommy Ramone (later Marky, Richie and CJ) were brudders (though unrelated) from the same borough and the same neighborhood as Peter Parker. Yes! No one seems to have pointed this out, but Peter Parker and the Ramones all hail from Forest Hills! Who better to record this powerful version of the Spider-Man cartoon show theme song?

This Day in Arf History: The First-Ever Saturday Morning Cartoon Airs!

On this day in 1955, CBS started airing Terrytoon’s classic Mighty Mouse theatrical shorts. This turned into an animated series and since then, Saturday mornings have been a whole lot more fun for everyone. Check out a classic toon below.
