This interesting cartoon made was released on this day in 1939. It now resides in the public domain/rarely viewed files. It’s Wacky Wonder Woman Wednesday!

The years have taken their toll on this Wonder Woman, but they have also given her the wisdom enough to answer the age old question: boxers or briefs?

Depends.

This Day In Arf History: Thimble Theater Strip Debuts

On this day in 1919, E.C. Segar’s Thimble Theater daily made its first appearance in newspapers. When Popeye debuted in 1929, in his introductory strip below, Thimble Theater became vastly popular in the 1930s. The one-eyed sailor soon became the main focus of the strip, of course! And the rest ain’t spinach. Arf! Arf!

D. J. David B. Spins Comics-Tunes: Linus and Lucy

I have so many songs relating to Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang, I don’t know where to start!

(click for a closer look)

The songs inspired by Sparky Shultz fall into three main categories: 1) Novelty tunes about Snoopy, courtesy of The Royal Guardsmen; 2) Songs from the Broadway show “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown”; and 3) Music from the various holiday-oriented, animated TV specials like “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” “It’s The Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown!” “Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown,” “Happy New Year, Charlie Brown!” “It Was a Short Summer, Charlie Brown,” and “It’s Arbor Day, Charlie Brown.” (I’m not making these up!) While we wait for the release of “Good Grief? Is It Flag Day Already, Charlie Brown?” we can look back at the first, and still the best, “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

Vince Guaraldi was already quite successful as the writer and artist of “Cast Your Fate To The Wind,” a catchy, jazzy piano number that was quickly turned into background music by the powerful elevator cartel. But when Vince wrote the score for the first Peanuts special, his immortality was ensured.

This Tuesday we present not one, not two, but THREE versions of the most memorable of these holiday tunes, “Linus and Lucy.” The first is by Vince himself, the second is an updated, punkalicious version by a band called Game Theory, and the third is an in-concert improvisation by Metallica!

Compare and contrast. I need your papers on my desk by next Tuesday.

By the way, I have yet another version of this song to share if Arf-lovers demand it!

This Day in Arf History: The Grinch Premieres in 1966

Dear Arf Lover, You’re a three decker toadstool and saurkraut sandwich, with arsenic sauce. Aw, just kidding. But you all know who we’re talking about.

(This is just part one. You can see the rest on TV or on youtube.)

It’s Doll Man Monday

This cover looks nice enough… patriotic, heroic, well-drawn. But wait! Why, he’s riding our national bird! Come on now, Doll Man — that’s just inappropriate.

This Day in Arf History: The First Simpsons Episode Airs

The first full-length episode of The Simpsons aired on this date in 1989. It was originally done as the eighth episode of the first season, but the Christmas theme made it perfect for a mid-December debut. BTW Matt Groening will be making his Arf
book debut in the next volume. Matt himself is doing some special art for Comic Arf!

This Day In Arf History: The Dragon Lady Debuts

In 1937, Milton Caniff’s sizzling villainess Dragon Lady debuted today in Terry and the Pirates. She became a pop culture icon, and the term entered the American vocabulary as a term for a tough and domineering seductress.

During WWII the Dragon Lady was a popular image painted on American bombers.

Caniff claimed that Joan Crawford was the visual inspiration for the Dragon Lady.

Check out my new book Clean Cartoonists Dirty Drawings. You’ll see in that tawdry tome a incredible Caniff drawing of the Dragon Lady like you’ve never seen her before—hubba! hubba! The Caniff drawing of the Dragon Lady, alone, is worth the price of the book, it’s so hot! There’s a preview of the book on a special Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings website here.

Amazon has the book at a great discount, the $19.95 price is only $13.57. If you order it with the new Arf book, Arf Forum you’ll get free shipping. And you’ll get the books in time for the holidays if you simply click now to order!
