Born on this day was Charles Kuhn (1892-1989), creator of the comic strip character “Grandma”. Grandma was started for King Features when the artist was in his 50′s (after a long career as a political cartoonist) and modeled after his own mother. “My mother was always full of pep. One time, at 75 years of age, she dressed up in my old Navy uniform, danced a jig and played a piece on her harp, just to help the neighborhood kids put on a backyard show”. I always make a point of going to gag cartoonist Mike Lynch’s blog as he’s always turning up items of great interest. Loving these re-mixed Bill Ward cartoons using a real girl I found at Mike’s blog today. Mike found the cartoons at another site which you can go to to check out the complete set.

It’s ironic that this post follows the Mutts post. I’m sure Patrick gives Jay Kennedy, as Comics Editor at King Features, much credit for helping shepherd Mutts (and the whole King recent stable of strips). I’m shocked to just learn that Jay just died by accidental drowning during a vacation in Costa Rica. It was always such a great pleasure to see Jay at conventions and comics industry events. He was such a sweet, gentle, smart guy, such a deep lover of comics. Jay especially had a deep personal passion for the undergrounds and small press (Jay produced a guide on underground comics and was working on a sequel). Jay was just 50 years old-a person with the intergrity he had and his love of creativity should have lived to be 100. We need more people on earth like him. What a loss. This is very upsetting.

Born on St Patrick’s Day, Patrick McDonnell should be a saint for his brilliant “Mutts” strip! I’m grateful that Patrick’s art has graced many of my books, from “The Art of Mickey Mouse” to “The Art of Barbie”. And his wonderfully surreal pre-Mutts comics made up a chapter in “Modern Arf”. Blonde-haired brat, Dennis the Menace debuted in American newspaper on March 12, 1951. Three days later, the “Beano” newstand comic book in England debuted a brown-haired brat, Dennis the Menace, on March 15, 1951! Golly, Mr. Wilson!

Happy birthday to Hank Ketcham (1920-2001)! The clean cartoonist of Dennis the Menace is featured in my upcoming book “Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings.” Below are some of the dirty drawings by Ketchum that will be there. And there’s some blog bonuses here-cartoons that didn’t fit in the book for space reasons.

I’ve found many very unusual photos to accompany the bios in “Clean Cartoonsts’ Dirty Drawings.” Here’s Ketcham and Tricky Dick. But now let’s get to Hank’s sexy stuff…
