Happy Birthday Charles “Grandma” Kuhn!Born on this day was Charles Kuhn (1892-1989), creator of the comic strip character “Grandma”. Grandma was started for King Features when the artist was in his 50′s (after a long career as a political cartoonist) and modeled after his own mother. “My mother was always full of pep. One time, at 75 years of age, she dressed up in my old Navy uniform, danced a jig and played a piece on her harp, just to help the neighborhood kids put on a backyard show”. Following is a bio page and some charming bits of cartooning advice from Kuhn. I’ve got more of these homilies if you’d like to see them. ![]() ![]() ![]() — C. Bill Ward Girls Come To Life!![]() ![]() I always make a point of going to gag cartoonist Mike Lynch’s blog as he’s always turning up items of great interest. Loving these re-mixed Bill Ward cartoons using a real girl I found at Mike’s blog today. Mike found the cartoons at another site which you can go to to check out the complete set. ![]() — C. Jay Kennedy R.I.P.![]() It’s ironic that this post follows the Mutts post. I’m sure Patrick gives Jay Kennedy, as Comics Editor at King Features, much credit for helping shepherd Mutts (and the whole King recent stable of strips). I’m shocked to just learn that Jay just died by accidental drowning during a vacation in Costa Rica. It was always such a great pleasure to see Jay at conventions and comics industry events. He was such a sweet, gentle, smart guy, such a deep lover of comics. Jay especially had a deep personal passion for the undergrounds and small press (Jay produced a guide on underground comics and was working on a sequel). Jay was just 50 years old-a person with the intergrity he had and his love of creativity should have lived to be 100. We need more people on earth like him. What a loss. This is very upsetting. ![]() — C. Yoe (in the funny papers) Saturday, March 17, 2026
Happy Birthday Patrick McDonnell!Born on St Patrick’s Day, Patrick McDonnell should be a saint for his brilliant “Mutts” strip! I’m grateful that Patrick’s art has graced many of my books, from “The Art of Mickey Mouse” to “The Art of Barbie”. And his wonderfully surreal pre-Mutts comics made up a chapter in “Modern Arf”. To order Modern Arf, click here. ![]() Patrick did this self-portrait (above) for “Weird But True Toon Factoids” and wrote an introduction to the book. To order a copy of “Weird But True Toon Factoids” click here. ![]() Above is something we at YOE! Studio had the pleasure of collaborating with Patrick and Dark Horse on…Mutts bookends! They’ll be out soon to hold all those books with the Birthday Boy’s art!

Hank “Dennis The Menace’ Ketcham’s Dirty DrawingsHappy birthday to Hank Ketcham (1920-2001)! The clean cartoonist of Dennis the Menace is featured in my upcoming book “Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings.” Below are some of the dirty drawings by Ketchum that will be there. And there’s some blog bonuses here-cartoons that didn’t fit in the book for space reasons. ![]() I’ve found many very unusual photos to accompany the bios in “Clean Cartoonsts’ Dirty Drawings.” Here’s Ketcham and Tricky Dick. But now let’s get to Hank’s sexy stuff… ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Ketcham sent the following drawing to Charles Schulz for fun. Apparently Schulz wasn’t amused, he didn’t reply to Ketcham. ![]() BTW, here’s a Dennis The Menace statue that YOE! Studio created for Dark Horse… ![]() ![]() Order the “Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings” book by clicking here so that you can be the first on your block to eyeball its pages! ![]() — C.
