Doll Man in splashing water-tied as usual to a phallic symbol with his legs spread wide! This time the phallic symbol has a nice touch, a skull painted between Doll Man’s legs. The villains are behind our little Dollman. Between the legs of the villain standing with his hands on his hips is his companion’s penis shaped head. Freudian funnies at their best!

Smokey Stover started his mis-adventures on this date in 1935. There’s gonna be a plethera of rare Smokey Stover material in a glorious Bil Holman/Smokey Stover chapter in the next Arf book, Arf Forum. Here’s some goodies I didn’t have room for.

Here’s one of my fave cartoonist pics of all time. Bill Holman gave it to me when I interviewed him for the Arf book a few weeks before his passing. It’s a cartoonist drunken revery. It’s actually not a pic of Holman I don’t think. I believe that’s Mac Miller is spitting out wine to create a pic of Smokey Stover.

What if Rob Liefeld’s Captain America was naked?!? Blogger John Jakala originally put together this image I believe. Would you rather have your eyes poked out with sharp sticks?

People are pointing out that this isn’t the first time Captain America has “died”. I want to counter that this isn’t the first time Captain America had a sex change! There was the period that Rob Liefeld drew Cap’s adventures and he had huge honking ‘man’maries. There is an excellent article on the this at Sequential Tart. And, for your viewing pleasure and edification Arf Lovers provides an example of Leifeld’s Captain America nicely coupled with yesterday’s photo, going boobies to boobies:

Wacky Wonder Woman Extra: Suffering Sappho! Wonder Woman just emailed me this astonishing photo! Wonder Woman saw Captain America this very afternoon on Paradise Island! Captain America isn’t dead! This is all a cover-up! The truth is that Captain America has had a sex change-yes the great Captain America is now a girl-and this photo, exclusive to Arf Lovers, PROOVES it! God bless Wonder Woman! Welcome to new Arf Lovers coming from The Beat, Journalista, Mike Lynch’s blog and Drawn. You should know that every Wednesday is Wacky Wonder Woman Wednesday. Arf Lover Dave B. has commented that it’s “a good blend of super-sexy Wonder Women, transvestite Wonder Women and Wonder Women throwing up in toilets.”

Today we have not one but TWO Wacky Wonder Women. I’m pretty sure they’re fighting over me! I’m also pretty sure their tops are gonna fall off and then their lips are gonna accidently brush together and then…well, I don’t want to bore you!

Birthday Boy Will Eisner (born on this day in 1917) in his birthday suit! In my forthcoming book Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings I will be presenting this Will Eisner nude self-portrait! There will be other “dirty drawings” by Eisner as well. Will Eisner is, of course, the creator of the well-known, ground-breaking, beloved, highly regarded comic book crimefighter…Doll Man! If I’m not mistaken, I even think Frank Miller is scripting a Doll Man movie for Hollywood! Eisner was always a great encouragement to me, generously giving me advice and material for the first Arf book, Arf Museum. But I never saw him like this:

BTW Will also created this other much lesser known and regarded hero, The Spirit. Will drew a picture (below) of this Spirit character for my book “Weird But True Toon Factoids” (you can order an autographed copy of this by clicking on the cover in the left-hand column). The weird fact involved something that Maggie Thompson pointed out to me years ago and more nudity: The Spirit never wore socks! It doesn’t matter, anyway, The Spirit being a very minor hero next to the great Doll Man!

Denis Kitchen lent me the nude self portrait of Will Eisner for the Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings book. Denis was Will’s agent for many, many years. I assume he held sway over Eisner because he had this revealing picture of him. But now it’s out for the world to see! Now if I could only unearth a pic of Doll Man in the nude-how cool would THAT be!?!

For new readers of the blog you should know that every week things start off right with “Doll Man Monday!” Doll Man was a Golden Age comic book superhero whose covers were always filled with kinkiness, sexual symbolism and general weirdness. Here’s a good example: Doll Man and a chick tied up with a pretty phallic rocket looming in the background. There’s never a shortage of phallic symbols on a Doll Man cover, this has test tubes and skyscrapers, too, thrown in for good effect. I like how Doll Man is tied up with rubber bands and the girl only has ropes around her shoulders. Around her chest would have been more confining but this mad scientist from central casting is, if nothing else, a gentleman!
