Happy Birthday Charles “Grandma” Kuhn!
Born on this day was Charles Kuhn (1892-1989), creator of the comic strip character “Grandma”. Grandma was started for King Features when the artist was in his 50′s (after a long career as a political cartoonist) and modeled after his own mother. “My mother was always full of pep. One time, at 75 years of age, she dressed up in my old Navy uniform, danced a jig and played a piece on her harp, just to help the neighborhood kids put on a backyard show”. Following is a bio page and some charming bits of cartooning advice from Kuhn. I’ve got more of these homilies if you’d like to see them.

I love this kinda stuff!
Where did your get the Kuhn bio page from? Ditto the cartooning advice page?
And could you make them both bigger with a click of the mouse?
Thanks, Craig — and more, more, more!
[...] Craig Yoe presents a sampling of work — complete with advice for cartoonists — by the late Charles Kuhn, creator of the strip Grandma. (Above: excerpt from Yoe’s excerpts.) [...]
I ditto Mike Lynch’s comments!
Especially the “more, more, more,” on Mr. Kuhn’s work!
Thanks Craig!
Okay, Mike, Dirk and Gary, I love this stuff, too, and will post more Kuhn homilies when I get a chance here. I’m trying to decide if it’d be more fun to do one a day or another big batch. I *KNOW* you’re gonna say a big batch-but which would be more FUN?!?!

Boy, I had completely forgotten the “Grandma” strip, but as soon as I saw one drawing, it all came back to me.
Thanks for the memories.
