D. J. David B. Spins Comics-Tunes: Batman

Okay, it’s the Tuesday you’ve all been waiting for, the one where I begin to show off my vast collection of Bat-Tunes.

Nineteen sixty-six was a banner year for comics fans, because that’s when Batman made his debut as a twice-weekly TV series complete with BIFF! BANG! and POW! sound effects.

The world went bats for the show, as it worked its way into the culture with bat-toys, bat-products, and even bat-jokes. A typical bat-gag from the period went something like this:

Q: “Why didn’t Batman answer the Bat-Phone?”
A: “He was in the Bat-Room.”
Holy rotten eggs, Batman! What a stinky joke!

The theme song from the TV show was a huge hit as well, possibly because its lyrics made it so easy to sing along with:

Nana-nana-nana-nana-nana-nana-nana-nana
Batman
Batman
Batman

Not only was it easy to sing, but every guy within arm’s reach of a guitar could play it – and most of them did. Here’s just one of a skadillion versions of the Batman Theme you’ll be hearing on Tuesdays to come. This kick-ass treatment is by Davie Allen and the Arrows.

man, i HAD been looking forward to this day, dj david b.! and you didn’t disapoint-that version rocks!

  2. DJ David B. Says:

    Thanx!

By the way, I didn’t mean to suggest that EVERY Tuesday would feature The Batman Theme from now on, just that I have a few (dozen) versions lined up for the future. I can’t see posting different renditions of The Batman Theme more than once a month — unless Arf-lovers demand it, of course!

  3. Michael Burton Says:

Once a month sounds like plenty to me.

  4. DJ David B. Says:

Yeah, maybe once each quarter would suffice.

While we’re on the subject, how often would you like to hear a rendition of “I’m Popeye The Sailor Man”? I have quite a few versions of that song, too.

  5. Michael Burton Says:

Once a month sounds about right for that, too — even though I’m curious about the different versions. Do you have the one from the movie “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”?

  6. DJ David B. Says:

Wait, there’s a version of “I’m Popeye The Sailor Man” in “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”? I had no idea! Now I have to find it.
