Screaming Yellow Zonkers box art
I ran across these two Screaming Yellow Zonkers boxes and had to post them ! The most humorous bit of food packaging I’ve ever seen AND the first use of BLACK for food packaging ! Hopefully they’ll enlarge well enough for you to be able to read the text ! These were produced in the late 1960′s and there were quite a variety of versions. This one shares the cartoon illustrations and designs of Seymour Chwast with the airbrush artwork of Charlie White. . .

In addition to the retail packaging, they also did award winning radio and TV ads. Here’s one of my favorite animated spots animated by Jack Dazzo (who also animated R.O. Blechman’s classic Alka-Seltzer “Talking Stomach” commercial. . . (sorry, but this is the best quality I can find. . .)
I worked with Jack at Perpetual Motion Pictures years ago and he spoke about doing the animated walking sequence - where the “Frankenstein-like” character slaps his leg to continue moving forward and that’s later repeated at the end. . . he’d never had to do anything so outrageous before. . .
In 1989, while working at Blechman’s The Ink Tank in NY, I was lucky enough to be involved in the resurrection of the Screaming Yellow Zonkers brand. Campbell Mithun-Esty out of Minneapolis was the advertising agency and had already contracted illustrator Hal Mayforth to do the print. The Ink Tank was brought on to do the animation. Tony Eastman animated with Tom Pomposello doing the wonderful sound design ! Here it is:

Later, J.J. Sedelmaier Productions, Inc. was asked to do the humorous text for new package in the style of Hal Mayforth - WITH his approval, of course ! It was the studio’s very first print job !
