D. J. David B. Spins Comics-Tunes: Superman For Adults?
As the debate in the blogosphere rages over whether it’s Man of Steel or The Lone Ranger that does a better job of ruining treasured, iconic characters… tarnishing cherished childhood memories… and sullying the very fabric of human existence, destroying everything that is good and decent in the world… it’s important to remember that Superman was never intended to be a grim, gritty, realistic portrayal of an alien savior with x-ray vision who wears a red cape. Superman was created by children, for children. (Jerry and Joe weren’t old enough to vote when they came up with Superman.)
As a comic book character, Superman is supposed to entertain kids on rainy days, to give them easy-to-read stories that will hold their interest and challenge their imaginations. Essentially, it’s a silly concept. Not only that Lois Lane doesn’t recognize Superman because he wears glasses in his Clark Kent disguise, but the whole thing: strange visitor from another planet, powers and abilities, yadda, yadda, yadda. The idea of a guy who can jump tall buildings and run faster than a speeding bullet is about as true-to-life as Paul Bunyan or Mother Goose.
If you’re looking for a realistic, adult story, there are probably better places to try than between the covers of a comic book. Not to say Superman isn’t great! Just that trying to turn a kid’s super-hero story into a serious film for adults is a fool’s errand. The fault isn’t with the source material; it’s with these filmmakers who seem to have lost their sense of decency, their knowledge of what’s right and wrong, and their childlike sense of wonder. It’s sad.
In an effort to restore that original, innocent joy of Superman, we are proud to present a gallery of charming cover images that don’t take Superman so darn seriously, along with a song made specifically for children. Forget your adult problems for a moment and imagine a world where Superman does good deeds and helps people simply because it’s the right thing to do. This is the way Superman was meant to be enjoyed. (Leave that dark, gritty stuff for Batman.)

Those covers are simply wonderful. Coincidentally, the World’s Finest Blog has been recently recounting the early issues of that comic, and the covers for the first seventy issues or so are (for the most part) of the same whimsical gag-style.
