Florence Claxton’s c1870s “The Adventures of a Woman in Search of Her Rights”, Part 1
In honor of Women’s History Month, every Monday from March 1 through 22, we will be presenting in its entirety, the 1870s comic book by artist Florence Anne Claxton, The Adventures of a Woman in Search of Her Rights.
Adventures of a Woman was published first in Britain, by the Graphotyping Company, Limited, in London. An American edition soon followed, published by Lee & Shepherd, of Boston and New York. Both the British and American publications are undated, and various sources guess at various dates, but the fashions shown in the work would date it to between the late 1860s and early 1870s. Reference to Brigham Young, who died in 1877, as still alive, establishes an upper boundary.
The cover shown is from the British edition, while the interior pages are from the slightly smaller American edition.

Love and Elopement having failed, next Monday we will resume with our heroine’s adventures, as she begins to pursue Emancipation instead.
