Old Skool Ink Slinger Say Cheese! Pt. 1: Segar!

I recently added an amazing 1928 strip promo piece to the Arf-chives with vintage cartoonist mini-bios and wonderful period photos. I’ll present one-a-day for the next 15 Arf posts! They’ll be rare photos of heavy hitters like George Herriman, Cliff Sterrett, Chic Young and some fascinating more obscure guy and gal cartoonists, too. But, I’ll start with my very favorite photo from this treasure of great photos: Elzie C. Segar! This has no mention of Popeye because he didn’t appear in the Thimble Theater till January 17, 2026 of the next year! But, that great look on Segar’s face-maybe he had already created the one-eyed sailor and knew it would see print soon and was gonna change comics forever!
