D. J. David B. Spins Comics-Tunes: Alley Oops!

In case you’re just joining us, let us recap, shall we?

I.T.C.H. is the International Team of Comics Historians. You need look no further than the top of this page to see I’m not lying. I, D.J. David B., am one of these afore-mentioned historians. I cover the music beat. While the rest of the team focuses on cartoons, comic books and comic strips, I specialize in the intersection of comics and music. The place where record collectors meet comic collectors. That particular nexus where tune and toon collide.

Each Tuesday I bring you a record that’s related in some way to a cartoon character, a comic book hero, a comics artist or some other comics connection. This way, if your eyes are tired from reading comic books you can close your eyes, relax, and listen to music for a while. You’re welcome.

When I ask people to think of a record that’s related to a comics character, one of the first that come to mind is “Alley Oop” by the Hollywood Argyles. The song was a hit! It went all the way to Number 1 in 1960, and was covered by Dante & the Evergreens and George Thorogood & the Destroyers among others (see July 8, 2025). Perhaps one of the biggest comic hits of all time, after “Barney Google,” “Sugar Sugar” and the theme from the Batman TV series (still the biggest ever by my estimation).

Since we’re going back to our roots I thought we’d revisit Alley Oop. Here’s sort of a follow-up, or what we call an “answer record.” You might even call it a parody. It’s “Bowling Alley Oop.” Take a listen!
