COMIC BOOK COMPULSIVE — Captain Marvel #68 UK

Here’s Captain Marvel Adventures #68, yet another L. Miller (and Son) b&w reprint of an American Golden Age comic book — specifically, Captain Marvel Adventures #123 from 1951. Believe me, I had absolutely no intention of “going there” yet again. As much as I love seeing old comic books in black and white enough is enough — at least that’s what I thought until I saw that great C.C. Beck cover. I mean, are they adorable prehistoric killing machines or what?

Happily “The Dinosaur Dilemma” is that rare moment when the contents of a Golden Age comic actually lives up to the cover. Once again instead of a cliched plot writer Otto Binder puts The World’s Mightiest Mortal into one of those (forgive me) binds outside his wheelhouse (i.e. flying and smashing stuff)

And here’s a Mr. Tawny story that’s a bit of a disappointment. A lot of Binder’s Tawny stories put the talking tiger into the role of beleaguered everyman, so the prospect of seeing getting involved in politics is appealing. But unfortunately it has a pretty standard “bullets and ballots” type b-movie plot with Tawny needlessly risking his life just to prove he’s not a “mouse”.
