The Ruling Clawss: Born into Privilege

We all know the old business mantra, “You need to have money, to make money.” One of our two (major) Presidential candidate’s claim to success is grounded in having inherited his start-up funds, and, while on the campaign trail, he told students (at Otterbein University in Ohio) that if they wanted to pay for their education or start a business, they should just “borrow money if you have to from your parents”.

Apparently, that not all people have wealthy parents, is outside his imagination. You’re either the 1%, or you’re lazy failures leeching on the rich. There is no middle ground.

So, for a peek into the kind of background that has grounded this candidate’s thinking, let’s look again at the work of cartoonist Syd Hoff (working under the pseudonym, “A. Redfield“), collected in his 1935 Great Depression I book, The Ruling Clawss, reprinting his cartoons which had originally appeared in The Daily Worker.

Enjoy!
