COMIC BOOK COMPULSIVE — Buster Book 1968
As previously established, all British comic weeklies were anthologies that had a little bit of everything; the primarily serious ones had humor strips and the funny focused ones had adventure strips. Buster was a humor weekly with a surprising amount of continuing serials, a lot of which featured fantastic characters. As you can see from the 1968 Buster Book.
Like Thunderbolt the Avenger, that rarest of things, a perfectly straight British take on the superhero genre. In reality Police Constable Mick Riley who “with the aid of his wonder wrist watch” could become a fairly impressive superhero in spite of his DYI superhero costume that made him look like minor league professional wrestler. Except of course for the mesh shirt which is, quite frankly, kind of creepy in a “stranger danger” way.
In spite of a signature look that shouted ‘street level superhero’ Thunderbolt the Avenger could actually fly; but given his, um, unique flying stance it’s pretty clear he really wasn’t all that into it.
British boy comics were full of stories about super vehicles of one kind or other but I’ve never heard of the one included in this Annual “Colossus”, which as far as I can tell was a one-off by creators unknown about a super submersible. If I’m wrong I’m sure someone will be good enough to correct me.
