“Young Troublesome, or, Master Jacky’s Holidays”, 1850, Part 1

Following, Part One of our serialization of British cartoonist John Leech‘s 1850 Christmas comic, Young Troublesome, or, Master Jacky’s Holidays. Summarized as, “From the Blessed Moment of his leaving school, to the identical moment of his going back again, showing there never was such a boy as that boy.”

Young Troublesome was originally published by Bradbury & Evans, London. The American version, published by Willis P. Hazard, Philadelphia, re-engraved John Leech’s art due to not having the original printing plates.

Click on the pictures above & below, to view larger, readable versions.

Above, the cover of the British version, and below left, the British version’s title page. While below right, is the American cover, which uses the same art found on the British title page. These serve as Panel One of the story, plus provides our first comparison of John Leech’s art, versus the re-engraved copy.

Below left, the pure John Leech Brit version; below right, the American redrawn variation.

For the remainder of our serialization, we’ll be presenting the American printing of Young Troublesome (for the simple reason that the spine of the Brit version cracks, when placed flat on a scanner, while the American doesn’t).

Next week, Part Two.
