Tigwissel Tuesdays #12: Professor Tigwissel’s Fashion Statement, September 25th, 1875

The sixth appearance of artist Livingston Hopkins‘ continuing comic strip character, Professor Tigwissel, was a two-panel cameo in the above September 25th, 1875 (New York) Daily Graphic cartoon. Titled The Calendar of Fashion — Calling in the White Hats, it’s a commentary on the apparent 1870s fashion faux-pas, of wearing white hats beyond Summer.

(Click on the above picture to see a larger version!)

Additionally, compare the second panel of the below 1870s advertising fold-out comic book, with its young newsboy shouting in word balloon up at the taller character, versus the Tigwissel panel above, showing a young messenger boy shouting in word balloon up at Tigwissel. While attributed to Taylor, the authorship of the below unsigned comic has never been certain. I have for years gone back-and-forth on whether it might actually have been created by Livingston Hopkins. The match up of these two similar scenes (plus, the art styles), has me back on the “Created by Livingston Hopkins” side of the fence.
