D. J. David B. Spins Comics-Tunes: Meet The Flintstones (and the Rubbles)
Somebody out there who is a bigger cartoon expert than me, can probably tell me (and probably will) where this track comes from. It’s not the “Meet The Flintstones” theme we’ve heard over and over again on endlessly rerun episodes of The Flintstones in syndication. Was it from the first season? The pilot? Some kind of early experiment or first draft?
Then again, The Flintstones is notorious for revisionism. The original end title theme song said “We’ll have a GAY old time” but it was later changed to “We’ll have a GREAT old time” when someone realized that two barefoot guys dressed in fur and hanging out in a cave together seemed, well, a little gay.
(This was the only piece of Flintstones art I could find online that wasn’t pornographic. Somebody has waaaay to much time on his hands.)
Anyhow, it’s good to hear the Rubbles finally get their due.

You have a great talent for finding obscure stuff. Are you secretly Dr. Demento? I’m glad you’ve decided to use this talent for good rather than evil.
I saw the first season of The Flintstones, way back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and this isn’t familiar to me, so I don’t think it’s the first season. But then I was but a wee Cro-Magnon child back then, so I wouldn’t put a lot of faith in my memory.
I’ve worked with Barry Hansen but we are not the same person. Thanks for the compliment (I think).
According to my longtime friend, Disney and Hanna-Barbera aficionado Joe Torcivia, the “first draft” of the “Meet the Flintstones” song is exactly what this is. This prototypical version was issued as part of a record album, “Songs of the Flintstones,” released during either the first or second season of the show. At that time, “Rise and Shine” was still the show’s theme song. “Meet the Flintstones,” in its more well-known version, would only replace it later on.
Joe tells me that eight songs from this album are included as extra features on the “THE FLINTSTONES: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON” DVD set.
