Weird But True! Mutt and Jeff didn’t start out as a team. Mutt was a single act at the beginning of the strip (the very first long running daily strip).

I wrote esteemed historian R.C. Harvey to confirm that today was the historic date that Mutt and Jeff met. Bob replied, “Mutt met Jeff in the local looney bin where he, Mutt, had been consigned by a judge for stealing money to bet with. The date was March 27, 1908; but it wasn’t until April 2 that we learn Jeff’s name. Or not. He said he was Jeffries, meaning Jim Jeffries, the current heavyweight champion. Humoring him, Mutt called him “Jeff” and so he was, henceforth and forever after. But you knew most of that if you’ve read the latest opus, Op. 202, at Rancid Raves HQ”.
