D. J. David B. Spins Comics-Tunes: Jimmy Olsen

Did anyone notice how hard we work here at Arf Headquarters to bring you rare, unusual and often mediocre records that you’ve probably never heard before? Well, I think I speak for everyone here when I say we’ve topped ourselves this Tuesday! It’s not a song about a comic strip character or a comic book title. It’s about one specific issue! Now we’re talking obscurities. But if you were alive during that halcyon Age known as Silver, you may have read “The Red-Headed Beatle of 1000 BC” in Jimmy Olsen #79.

This story has everything! Superman! Jimmy Olsen time traveling! Stupid wigs! The name “Ringo” on the cover! (In reference to Ringo Starr, not to The Ringo Kid). Not a dream. Not a hoax. Not an imaginary story. Jimmy travels back to the ancient past to bring Beatlesque music to the world a thousand years before its time.

Well, leave it to The Makers to commemorate this event with a song entitled, “Red-Headed Beatle of 1000 BC.” Just click on the bar below…

(if no bar appears please click here to listen)

Next Tuesday, a wedding song.

the comic book cover with twice as many “yeah, yeah, yeahs” as “she loves you”! who needs the beatles? this song is a great find, d j david b, you proud member of the j. o. club!

    Thanks!

The great thing this song is that being an instrumental, there are no lyrics to give away the title. I could have easily said this song was entitled “The Good Duck Artist” or “Hooray For Smokey Stover” or “Krazy Kat and Ignatz” and who would be the wiser?

But it really is called “The Red-Headed Beatle of 1000 BC.” Trust me.

Was there The Red-Headed Rolling Stone of 1000 B.C., The Red Headed Byrd of 1000 B.C., The Red Headed Tiny Tim of 1000 B.C., etc?

  4. D. J. David B. Says:

Yes, they were all members of the Substitute Legion of Super-Heroes, along with Dandruff Lad and Itchy Lass.

Hey, if we can’t trust D. J. David B. who can we trust? Love these tunes!

  6. Michael Burton Says:

The lad blew a mean ram’s horn.

That green t-shirt under toga look is a fashion classic.

I’m still confused, though. Jimmy’s as popular as Ringo in the ancient past — you can believe it because Superman thought it, and his thought balloons never lie. But how popular was Ringo almost 3,000 years before he was born?

  7. D. J. David B. Says:

Ringo’s popularity peaked in the mid 1960s, but he’s been popular for thousands of years. You can look it up.

  8. Craig Says:

I don’t know what the hell you guys are talking about but I’ll tell you this-this cover proves that Jimmy Olsen always look good in a skirt!

  9. D. J. David B. Says:

I believe thre’s an issue in which J.O. dresses in drag, but I don’t have a song to go with it.
