Okay, trivia buffs, listen up! Here’s an obscure track that makes reference to an even more obscure comic book character. Can you tell me where “he†first appeared? The song is called “Ego, the Living Planet†and it’s by a drug-rock heavy-metal band called Monster Magnet.

The song sounds great, but I don’t get the connection to the comic character.
Technically I think it’s “THE MIGHTY Thor” #133.

Monster Magnet paid a more pronounced tribute to the King on their song “Melt”, the opener of 2002′s “God Says No”, the second verse starting “I was thinking how the world should have cried / On the day Jack Kirby died”.
Another tip of the musical hat is Gregg Bendian’s “Requiem for Jack Kirby” album, which in its space jazz glory is slightly less accessible to rockers like Dave Wyndorf and myself
I have the “Requiem…” CD; it might just show up here on the future Tuesday. I didn’t know about “Melt,” though. That’s good information!
I liked spotlighting this song because it’s such an insider reference. You really need to know your Marvel pantheon to know who Ego was.
