D. J. David B. Spins Comics-Tunes: Ego, The Living Planet

Okay, trivia buffs, listen up! Here’s an obscure track that makes reference to an even more obscure comic book character. Can you tell me where “he†first appeared? The song is called “Ego, the Living Planet†and it’s by a drug-rock heavy-metal band called Monster Magnet.
Leave your answers in the comments section and the first one with the correct title and issue number wins a crummy prize of some kind.
(Of course you can see EXACTLY where Ego first appeared simply by looking at the comic book cover above. Not a very challenging trivia contest, was it?)

On a personal note, I had the privilege of working with Dave Wyndorf, the singer and founding member of Monster Magnet, when he was too young to drive and a member of seminal punk group Shrapnel. So now you know.

Oooh! I know! Thor #133, right?
Man! Look at all them Kirby Dots!
The song sounds great, but I don’t get the connection to the comic character.
Technically I think it’s “THE MIGHTY Thor” #133.
I love these obscurities! Just how many songs did Kirby inspire, anyway?!?
The album cover looks Steranko-esque!
Wow, you both have the right answer! Although Robert may have a slight edge, I’m going to declare it a tie and award prizes to both Michael and Robert. Now I just have to find an old record I can break in half.
Send your mailing addresses to [email protected] and I’ll send you each your half of the prize. Congratulations!
Monster Magnet paid a more pronounced tribute to the King on their song “Melt”, the opener of 2002′s “God Says No”, the second verse starting “I was thinking how the world should have cried / On the day Jack Kirby died”.
Another tip of the musical hat is Gregg Bendian’s “Requiem for Jack Kirby” album, which in its space jazz glory is slightly less accessible to rockers like Dave Wyndorf and myself
I have the “Requiem…” CD; it might just show up here on the future Tuesday. I didn’t know about “Melt,” though. That’s good information!
I liked spotlighting this song because it’s such an insider reference. You really need to know your Marvel pantheon to know who Ego was.
Ego The Living Planet first appeared in “The Mighty Thor” (vol. 1) #132.
Not #133.
This contest is fixed.
Oh no! Even I had it wrong.
Because of my mistake I’m going to have to declare this a three-way tie.
Joe, send you mailing address to [email protected] and I’ll get your third of the prize in the mail.
Michael Burton: Your prize is waiting! I just need your mailing address. Send it to [email protected] and it will be delivered by a uniformed employee of the US government!
