On this day in 1877, German comic artist Rudolph Dirks was born. Kirks moved to Chicago at the age of seven and is probably best known for The Katzenjammer Kids. He was one of the most successful comic pioneers.

On this day in 1903 Darrell Craig McClure was born. McClure was best known for his work on Little Annie Rooney and began his apprenticeship as a cartoonist and animator after working as a tailor, lumberjack, and merchant seaman.

On this day in 1998 Antonio Prohias died. Prohias was the Cuban artist behind Spy vs. Spy, printed in MAD Magazine. He is buried in Woodlawn Park Cemetery and Mausoleum in Miami, Florida.

This day in 1993 Harvey Kurtzman died. Kurtzman was the founding editor of the MAD comics in 1952-He was equally well known for his Little Annie Fanny stories in Playboy magazine.

On this day in 1893 Elizabeth Holloway Marston was born! She was the inspiration and co-creator of Wonder Woman! Marston was a very liberal woman for her era-she had a career and was involved in the development of a systolic blood pressure test that picked up on deception(Lasso of Truth, anyone?).

On this day in 1949 William Messner-Loebs was born. He took over writing The Flash and Wonder Woman series and is the creator of Artemis of Bana-Mighdall. Interestingly, during his infancy Messner-Loebs’ right arm was amputated due to a cancerous tumor making him a lefty.

On this day in 2007 DC comic artist Bob Oksner died. Oksner’s work included The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, Welcome Back, Kotter, Angel and the Ape, and later the DC superhero series Wonder Woman, Superman, and Black Orchid among many others.
