D. J. David B. Spins Comics-Tunes: Twisting With Popeye

In the comics tunes industry (this is an industry?) there are a few characters who stand out as having more music about them than any others. Batman is one of the obvious leaders. Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang are right up there as well. And also with a well-deserved spot in the Top Three is Popeye.

Why does Popeye lend himself to the subject of so many songs? Is it the spinach eating? His resultant strength? His romance with Olive Oyl? Nobody really knows. All we know is that Popeye (or “Mathurin” as I like to call him) is enormously popular in comic strips, comic books and animated cartoons. Plus toys and merchandise and fried chicken. So why not records as well?

Here’s a nice number you can twist to. Take it away Steve Douglas!

“Mathurin” is obviously a Popeye’s french name. But it is an old old name (It is no longer used since the 1950s).

“Mathurin” is a real french fistname. Often, it is a caricatural fistname to old peasants name.

Young french boys (and girls) doesn’t know “Mathurin le marin” :)

Hey, if you guys don’t know about “Probe Is Turing On The People,” you really should. (Don’t ask me why the site is called that, ’cause I don’t know.) But check out “Session #139″ on this page…

    http://philxmilstein.com/probe/03.htm

On it you’ll find no less than 22 Popeye (and Olive Oyl!) songs to download.

Craig, I hope to see you at MOCCA this year.
