Thought I’d throw another heavy-hitter at you from this 1928 comics promotion before going into some of the more obscure cartoonists. But, I don’t think I’ve seen this particular photo before of Krazy Kat’s “Garge” Herriman in the wonderful book series Bill Blackbeard and Chris Ware are doing for Fantagraphics or elsewhere. I never knew, either, that Herriman was “a billionaire in laughs”.

There were a number of wonderful, almost identical, kid gang strips in this period. Tom MacNamara’s “Us Boys” (MacNamara later went to Hollywood and used his experience to help develop the Our Gang/Little Rascal comedies), Gene Byrne’s “Reg’lar Fellers” (later ghosted by George Carlson) and Ad Carter’s Just Kids (promoted here-with his own kids, I bet).
