Craig is busy with the Licensing Show (Booth 1549) this week but as a special treat we’re running outtakes from the “Artists and Models” section from Modern Arf, enjoy… and don’t worry Wednesday will still feature a Wacky Wonder Woman.

Here’s a Dedini (R.I.P.) cartoon I could have had in the “Artists and Models” section of Modern Arf…

“Dammit, I’m trying to look fresh and innocent.”
Gotta get back on preparing for the Licensing Show (Booth 1549)…

Jazzy Jerry Beck says Arf Museum is “cleverly compiled”.The awesome animation blog, Cartoon Brew just ran a review of the new Arf book by co-brewmaster Jerry Beck. You can’t read it below…
” Last year I raved about Craig Yoe’s Modern Arf, but I just got a copy of Yoe’s follow up, Arf Museum, and it’s even better. Is it a book? Is it a perodical? Whatever it is, it’s a series of publications (from Fantagraphics) that seem at first glance like a surreal stream of consciousness direct from Yoe’s brain - but upon closer inspection, it’s clear this is cleverly compiled and meticulously researched, with rare art from the masters of the form; a highly entertaining volume you’ll peruse over and over again. Any book that can artistically connect Picasso, Cliff Sterrett, Rube Goldberg, Chester Gould and Curt Swan has got my vote. In this volume, Yoe presents examples of cartoonists and their relation to 20th Century modern art. He also examines the girly gag cartoons of Reamer Keller, cartoonists and tattoos, comic strip giant apes, Charles Bennett’s evolutionary cartoons of the 1800s, unpublished paintings of The Yellow Kid by Outcault, and much much more.
“If you know who Keller, Bennett and Outcault are you need to get this book now. If you don’t know who they are - you really need to order this book immediately. Buy it here.”

Jerry’s own animated cartoon, Hornswiggle, has just been completed. He has fascinting behind the scenes details on its creation on a special blog you can read by clicking the image above.I WILL get to a review of the MoCCA show and goodies I got there plus photos, etc. It’s just that we’re krazed here at YOE! Studio with more work than we’ve ever had and preparing for the Licensing Show which we’ll have a booth (#1549) at next week. Stop by and say “Yo!” if you’re there. I can bring a Arf Museum for you if you’d like.

Love how this Wonder Woman’s eyes match the lipstick, cape and top! A bunch of people at MoCCA told me “Wacky Wonder Woman Wednesday” is their fave part of the blog. Bunch of weirdos.

A fella came up to me at the MoCCA Art Festival and said he really enjoys the blog and commented, “You sure do have a lot of boobs on there!” *Blush*, I guess I’m like Frank Zappa who sang, “I like boobs a lot”. Here’s a French, early 1900s cartoon that I didn’t have room to put in the “Artists and Models” section of Modern Arf. It celebrates boobs, I guess. The translation is roughly, “A Model interview: “Good, I can see these are real.”
Just like that artist is happy with his model, reviewers seem to be quite pleased with the new Arf book, Arf Museum. Here’s an enthusiastic review written by Mark Frauenfelder that appeared in his great Boing Boing blog:

Mark Frauenfelder.
“Craig Yoe’s second Arf publication Arf Museum just came out, and it’s an immensely giddy, scholary, funny, shocking, and enjoyable history of comics and art seen through the eccentric and eclectic filter of Yoe’s fevered, comics-crazed mind.
“Yoe was the Creative Director of Jim Henson’s Muppets and a Creative Director at Nickeodeon and I doubt there’s anyone who knows more about cool old comics and who has a better collection of comic book art.
“Some of the artists and characters in this issue include Art Spiegelman, Picasso, Patrick McDonnell, Bettie Page, Charles Addams, Coop, Dan DeCarlo, Hugh Hefner, Rube Goldberg, King Kong, Ernie Bushmiller, and Chester Gould.
“Like those early, giant-sized issues of RAW, Arf Museum is something I’m going to keep, treasure, and pull off the shelf to pore over for the rest of my life.”
Thanks, Mark. I’m humbled.
Below is a hot drawing by Mark Frauenfelder, BTW, check out more on his illustration website. I’m guessing by the topless island girl subject matter that , besides Arf Museum that Mark, too, likes boobs a lot.

I don’t have a damn CLUE why everybody always talks about that crap like Calvin and Hobbes, Gasoline Alley, Krazy Kat, Peanuts, etc. The coolest feature in the Sunday Funnies was, hands down, Ripley’s Believe it Or Not-it fucking ruled! Today, Arf Lovers, I’m showing you photos people sent in to Robert Ripley to try and get him to draw them up for the feature. Beg me and I’ll show you more.

The fourth annual Erotic Art Show opens this week at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco. Some real nice art. You can see provocative previews at their site. I thought Arf Lovers might particularly enjoy the painting by John John Jesse below. Who knew Robin had a dynamic duo?

Rolling Stone in a recent survey anointed Ryan one of the world’s coolest people. His Fantagraphics Angry Youth Comix makes you double over in laughter—and pain. The pain of laughing at such politically incorrect humor. I love him (but not in THAT way, I have a thing for his Mom as you’ll read below).

Johhny “Dollar” Ryan
Johnny recently edited a special comics edition of Vice magazine which is what I’ll be talking about with him today. Vice is available in hip boutiques and record stores for free and Johnny’s comic is worth every penny! Click on the cover fror a couple of sample pages. Then it’s on to the questions below!

(click for preview)
1. Johnny, does your mother know you edited a comics issue of a magazine called “Vice”?
No, she doesn’t know. In fact, she doesn’t know anything because she’s retarded.
2. I just screwed your Mom last night and she sure didn’t seem retarded. You got Mad Magazine’s Al Jaffee to do the cover. Who did you have to blow to score that?
He’s done illustration work for VICE before. The editor, Gavin McInnes, was the one who did the blowing.
3. You even got Jaffee to do a fart joke. How many pages would the magazine of been if you didn’t have high class comics about passing gas?
It would have been -8 pages.
4. Your own comics WERE the best thing in the ish, why did you bother with all those other losers?
“Losers”?!? Wow! That’s pretty cold-blooded, Yoesy! You are one mean dude!
Thanks, Johnny ! And say hi to your mom for me! -CY

*Headline for this story stolen from Mark Evanier’s great blog-can you blame me?

Jerry Beck (he had his own Arf Lovers Hi-Five interview on May 4th) just broke some incredible news on the must read Cartoon Brew blog. Legal shit has been finally, after decades of nonsense, been worked out and there are gonna be state of the art dvd’s of the complete Popeye cartoons. Jerry’s gonna be a consultant so we know it’ll be done right. All the fabulous details on Brew.
