D. J. David B. Spins Comics-Tunes: Happy Google Day!

It’s out! The new book on Barney Google is officially released TODAY. How about that! (Click here to order it from Amazon.)

Aside from lending his name to the famous search engine, Barney Google was an extraordinarily well-done and extremely popular comic strip in its day.

But Barney Google has another distinction in the annals of comicdom: he had a hit song! Perhaps second only to “The Batman Theme” in the number of recorded versions, the song “Barney Google” was a bona-fide hit. I’m not talking about “The Andy Panda Polka” or “The Green Hairnet” (to mention two not-so-hot comics-related tunes I presented here on recent Tuesdays) but an actual “Hey, let’s go buy that record!” kind of a hit. Or in those days, “Let’s go buy that sheet music!” Plus the catchy melody and the memorable refrain “with the goo-goo-googly eyes!” made the lyrics to “The Batman Theme” seem lame by comparison.

To celebrate the release of the new book I’m going to share with you several of these renditions, starting today with this vintage version by Jones & Hare.

  1. Ryan Says:

Oh, this takes me back… The Spike Jones version of this song was the first ever Comics-Tune posted, if I’m not mistaken? Got a BIG backlog of stuff to listen to here!

  2. D.J. David B. Says:

If you liked this one, fasten your seatbelt! I have quite a number of equally-great versions of the Barney Google song to share with you and your fellow ITCHers on future Tuesdays.

I.T.C.H is looking forward to your thoughts. Please, no flame. Thanks!
