From our Arf reporter & photographer: The glitterati were out in full force on Thursday, March 6th, when New York’s legendary Friar’s Club hosted a bookwarming party for More Old Jewish Comedians, the new Blab art book by Drew Friedman, published by Fantagraphics. Your Arf reporter was there to get all the details and a few wonderful photos.
The scene was “the comics meet the comics†as comedians mingled with cartoonists. There were even a couple of rock stars thrown in for good measure!
Cartoonists and illustrators often sign books at comics conventions and in bookstores, but state-of-the-art caricaturist Drew Friedman warranted this exclusive venue for his signing since the subject matter of the new book and his previous volume, Old Jewish Comedians, concerns comedy celebrities.
The list of famous people in attendance reads like a who’s who of comedy and comic art. The evening began with an introduction by Friar’s Club big shot Freddie Roman, who told some jokes. Very funny! Freddie introduced Mickey “Sgt. Bilko†Freeman, who told some jokes. Hilarious! Then they brought up Larry “F Troop†Storch, who told some jokes and did some impressions. What a riot! Thanks goodness Drew Friedman spoke next to give us all a break from the laughter!
Also at the event were TV talk show legend Joe Franklin; Michael Townsend Wright from The Uncle Floyd Show; New York TV host Bill Boggs; Jeffrey Ross, the comedian’s comedian; Dennis Diken, drummer for The Smithereens; and John Cafiero singer for pop-punk sensation Osaka Popstar.
Of special interest to Arf lovers was an appearance by Underworld comic artists Kaz, whose work will be in the next Arf book, Comic Arf. Hanging with Kaz was Tale Designed to Thrizzle cartoonist Michael Kupperman.
Capping the festivities was an appearance by Jerry Stiller, who told stories about growing up and signed copies of Drew’s book which prominently features his portrait.
What a great night!
